The 115-year-old institution also includes the Scott & White Clinic in Temple, multiple regional clinics throughout Central Texas, and a 200,000-member health plan. Scott & White is an academic health science center, serving as a major teaching facility for the College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin, and the Rangel College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine, Texas A&M Health Science Center. The Department of Pharmacy at Scott & White provides progressive, clinically oriented pharmacy services for the hospital, clinic and health plan. Included among the major departmental functions are 24-hour in-patient pharmacy services, the Drug Information Center, home infusion services, anticoagulation, diabetes and dyslipidemia management clinics and a wide range of clinical pharmacy services provided by Scott & White patient care pharmacists and clinical specialists. Clinical pharmacy specialists currently practice at Scott & White in a variety of specialty areas include adult medicine, pediatrics, hematology/oncology, drug information, and ambulatory care. In addition to provision of a wide array of clinically oriented patient care services, the Department of Pharmacy at Scott & White has a significant teaching/research presence within the institution. A major element of the departmental teaching mission involves offering both pharmacy practice and post-doctoral specialty residency training opportunities. The Scott & White Department of Pharmacy, in conjunction with the UT College of Pharmacy, offers six positions as hospital-based, ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residencies designed to provide broad training and experience in hospital pharmacy practice. Five of the positions are adult hospital pharmacy practice positions; one of the five has a hematology-oncology emphasis. The sixth one position emphasizes pediatric pharmacy practice at the S&W Childrens’ Hospital. The residents divide the year between clinical rotations and Scott & White patient care pharmacist responsibilities; the combination of training and practice responsibilities provide a blend of experience for highly motivated individuals with a significant interest in hospital pharmacy practice who are beginning their professional careers. Opportunities are also available for collaborative research and teaching experiences for the resident. |
