Scott & White Hospital located in central Texas, is a 112-year-old institution that includes the Scott & White Clinic in Temple, the 500-bed Scott & White Hospital, 25 regional clinics throughout Central Texas, and a 220,000-member health maintenance organization. Scott & White also serves as a major teaching facility for the College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine, Texas A&M System Health Science Center.

The Department of Pharmacy at Scott & White provides progressive, clinically oriented pharmacy services for the hospital, clinic and health plan. Included among the major departmental functions are 24-hour in-patient pharmacy services, the Drug Information Center, home infusion services, anticoagulation, diabetes and dyslipidemia management clinics and a wide range of clinical pharmacy services provided by Scott & White patient care pharmacists and clinical specialists.

In addition to provision of a wide array of clinically oriented patient care services, the Department of Pharmacy at Scott & White has a significant teaching/research presence within the institution. A major element of the departmental teaching mission involves offering both pharmacy practice and post-doctoral specialty residency training opportunities.

The Scott & White Department of Pharmacy, in conjunction with the College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin, offers a variety of clinical pharmacy residencies annually. One University of Texas-affiliated position is offered as a managed care residency designed to provide training and experience in a health maintenance organization (HMO) environment. Included is experience in both clinical and administrative managed care programs, along with research and education opportunities. Experiential components involve working with different disease state management programs and outcome studies involving HMO patients. These programs include outpatient services in anticoagulation therapy, lipid management, asthma management compliance counseling, antimicrobial therapy, peptic ulcer disease management, and management of musculoskeletal pain. The resident also gains exposure to administrative programs, including: benefit design and implementation, physician profiling, conversion programs and formulary development. This residency does not require a previous pharmacy practice residency. The residency carries an appointment as Clinical Instructor at the College of Pharmacy.

Previous managed care residents at Scott & White are now employed in a variety of managed care positions: pharmacy director, Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Texas; Caremark clinical specialist in managed care; managed care clinical specialist with the Department of Defense Pharmacoeconomics Center in San Antonio, and managed care clinical coordinator with the Indian Health Service.

Prior experience and/or residency training will be taken into consideration regarding whether this managed care residency will be considered as a PGY-1 or PGY-2 program.

The University of Texas at Austin and its affiliated institutions are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.  Qualified women and minorities are encouraged to apply.  Security sensitive; conviction verification conducted on applicant selected.
