Scott & White Memorial Hospital is a 636-bed tertiary care facility located in Temple, Texas.  In 2013, Scott & White Healthcare merged with Baylor Health Care System to become Baylor Scott & White Health.  It’s the largest not-for-profit healthcare network spanning across Texas.  Scott & White Memorial Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center and is an academic health science center, serving as a major teaching facility for the College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin, and the Rangel College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine, Texas A&M Health Science Center.

The Scott & White Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy provides progressive, clinically oriented pharmacy services for the hospital, clinic, and health plan. Included among the major departmental functions are 24-hour inpatient pharmacy services, home infusion services, anticoagulation, diabetes and dyslipidemia management clinics and a wide range of clinical pharmacy services provided by Scott & White patient care pharmacists and clinical specialists. Clinical specialists currently practice in a variety of specialty areas: adult medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, internal medicine, hematology/oncology, solid organ transplant, and ambulatory care.

In addition to provision of a wide array of clinically oriented patient care services, the Department of Pharmacy at Scott & White has a significant teaching/research presence within the institution. A major element of the departmental teaching mission involves offering both pharmacy practice and post-doctoral specialty residency training opportunities.

The Scott & White Department of Pharmacy, in conjunction with the UT College of Pharmacy, offers this unique PGY-1 hospital/clinic-based, ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency designed to provide broad training and experience in hospital pharmacy practice with an emphasis in the medical care of the hematology/oncology patient. This residency does not supplant the need for a PGY-2 specialty residency.  A small proportion of this PGY-1 experience will provide the resident with a basic foundation of oncology knowledge and appreciation for oncology patient care to which the resident will utilize in a future PGY-2 oncology residency.

The resident will divide the year between team rotations and “patient care pharmacist” training. The combination of training and practice responsibilities provide a blend of experience for highly motivated individuals with a significant interest in oncology and hospital pharmacy practice who are beginning their professional careers.  The resident’s required research project will be oncology-focused plus the resident will have the opportunity for teaching experiences.
