Research Interests

During her fellowship, Dr. Bettinger evaluated physician adherence to the TMAP depression algorithm in the "real world" setting. Dr. Bettinger has assisted in training clinicians and staff throughout Texas and several other states on the use of the TMAP algorithms. She also assisted in the development and initial pilot studies involving the computerized version of TMAP, CompTMAP.

Currently, Dr. Bettinger's research interests involve the detection and treatment of mental illnesses in the primary care setting, patient adherence, and the use of treatment algorithms in mental health. Dr. Bettinger is involved in several ongoing projects in the area of mental health outcomes including: evaluation of a psychiatric pharmacy consult service; utilization, predictors and effectiveness of antipsychotic polypharmacy; symptom profiles of children and adolescents with ADHD, bipolar disorder or depression; and improving patient outcomes in primary care in patients with depression and diabetes.

Dr. Bettinger received the National Institute of Mental Health's New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit New Investigator's Award in 2002 and the United States Pharmacopeia Fellowship Award in 2000. She is also a recipient of the NARSAD Young Investigator award (2003-2005).

In collaboration with other faculty in the Divisions of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration, Dr. Bettinger is involved in clinical training program in psychiatric pharmacotherapy and mental health outcomes. This program offers a M.S. or Ph.D. degree combined with a residency in psychiatric pharmacotherapy.
