Lisa M. Mican, Pharm.D., BCPP has served as the Assistant Director of Psychiatric Pharmacy Services for the Austin State Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor for the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy since July 2002. She obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree in May 2000 from the University of Texas and has been a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist since 2003. Dr. Mican completed an ASHP Accredited Specialty Residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio with an appointment as Clinical Instructor for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Prior to entering her clinical residency training, she served as the Pharmacist-In-Charge for the San Marcos Treatment Center, a residential adolescent psychiatric treatment facility.
Dr. Mican teaches in various didactic courses at the College of Pharmacy and precepts pharmacy student-interns and residents on clinical practice rotations at the Austin State Hospital. Classes Dr. Mican coordinates, facilitates, or team teaches at the University of Texas include PHR 280W Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice and Drug Treatment of Mental Disorders, PHR 385E Pharmacotherapeutics Iiia, PHR 392S Patient Assessment Skills Laboratory, PHR 488U Clinical Psychopharmacology and Therapeutics, and PHR 185P & 175P Pharmacotherapeutics Laboratories. The Austin State Hospital is a practice site affiliated with the UT College of Pharmacy's ASHP Accredited Specialty Residency program in psychiatry ( http://www.utexas.edu/pharmacy/divisions/pharmaco/postdoc/psych_aus.html ). Dr. Mican precepts residents on clinical rotations in a variety of practice experiences including acute care psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, cognitive behavioral/multiple disabilities, long-term care, and forensic psychiatry. She also assists the Austin Medical Education Program's (AMEP) Department of Psychiatry ( www.ameppsych.net ) by mentoring psychiatry resident research experiences at the Austin State Hospital. Although most of her focus is in clinical practice, research interests include management of acute agitation and aggression, atypical antipsychotic use in children and adolescents, metabolic complications of antipsychotic medication, and medication adherence.
Lisa Mican is the clinical coordinator for the Austin State Hospital Psychiatric Pharmacy Services Department. A variety of clinical services are offered including psychopharmaclogy consultations, pharmacy newsletter, PharmDigest , and patient symptom management and medication education classes. Dr. Mican is also involved in several committees including the Department of State Health Services Executive Formulary Committee, UT College of Pharmacy Post Pharm.D. Training Committee, AMEP Teaching Faculty in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Committee, Austin State Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and P&T Medication Utilization Subcommittee Chair. In 2005, Lisa Mican served as board chair for the non-profit organization, Education Alliance of Texas ( http://www.educationallianceoftexas.org/index.html ); the organization provides a variety of services to at-risk youth in the community including tutoring assistance, character enhancement, SAT preparation courses, and college guidance.
