Welcome!

  • Thank you for your interest in Course #1 in the micro-learning web series.
  • This is material that is given elsewhere as CE (continuing education) to health care professionals for a fee.
  • YOU have full access to the content at no charge AND there are no exams!
  • The series of courses covers several topics within the area of therapeutics for neurological and psychiatric diseases.
  • The format is unique - in as little as 6 minutes per day you can learn about the neurobiology of the addictions!

Introduction

  • There are 12 weeks of 5 days per week mini-lessons (60 in all) in this course.
  • Each lesson is designed to be easy to assimilate and typically consists of a title slide, and 2 sets of text and illustration slides, followed by a self-assessment question.
  • The self-assessment question is just for you (NO grade) --- it is a type of programmed learning that you may use to assess your progress.

Intro Continued

  • On some days you may be tired but wish to get some new knowledge.
  • You can do that in just 6 minutes.
  • On other days you may have more energy and wish to do more. You may do that also.
  • Your pace is solely determined by you.

Course Objectives

When you successfully complete this course you will be able to:
  • Cite the differences between drug abuse and drug addiction (dependency),
  • List and discuss the brain systems involved in addictions
  • State the neurotransmitters involved in addictions
  • Analyze the genetic basis for the addictions
  • Outline the importance of animal research in drug studies and
  • Compare and contrast modern treatments for reducing relapse in chemically dependent people, including dually diagnosed individuals.
