Development of Disease Biomarkers (R01)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement will provide resources to validate candidate biomarkers for well-defined human diseases of liver, kidney, urological tract, digestive and hematologic systems, and endocrine and metabolic disorders, diabetes and its complications, and obesity, for which there are no or very few biomarkers, or for which standard biomarkers are currently prohibitively invasive or expensive.

Identifying Non-coding RNA Targets for Cancer Early Detection and Prevention (R01, R21)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement, issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), encourages research grant applications from institutions/organizations on the discovery and characterization of non-coding (nc) RNAs in preneoplasias and early stage cancers to: 1) improve early cancer detection, intervention, and prevention; 2) predict risk of progression from preneoplasia to cancer, and 3) distinguish benign lesions from precancerous lesions.

Mechanisms, Measurement, and Management of Pain in Aging: from Molecular to Clinical (R01)
This FOA encourages Research Project Grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to (1) study biological, neurobiological, psychosocial, and clinical mechanisms and processes by which aging and/or age-related diseases affect the experience of pain, (2) examine biological, neurobiological, psychosocial, and clinical factors that impact pain experience and prevalence in older people, (3) evaluate existing pain assessment and/or management approaches in older adults, or (4) develop new assessment methods and/or management strategies for pain with particular attention to the needs of older adults. Studies involving animal models or human subjects are appropriate under this program announcement.

~FASTTex: Faculty and Student Teams for Technology
The goal of the ~FAST Tex Program is to help faculty transform and enhance teaching and student learning through innovative instructional uses of technology.
Important dates and activities for the upcoming 2010 season:
• October 31, 2009:
Statement of intent and consulting appointment deadline – faculty should emailfasttex@www.utexas.edu as soon as possible to make a consulting appointment.
• October 1 – November 28, 2009:
Proposal/project consulting – ~FAST Tex staff will explain project selection criteria, project development process, and help faculty brainstorm and articulate their vision into a viable proposal. Faculty must consult with ~FAST Tex staff first in order to submit a proposal.
• December 1, 2009:
Proposal deadline – online form will be available only to faculty who have completed consultation with ~FAST Tex staff.
• February 1, 2010:
Proposal acceptance notification
• February – June 2010:
Project preparation/content gathering – ~FAST Tex staff will work with faculty to prepare their project for development. Faculty must be able to gather and organize all project content by end of spring semester.
• July 2010 – August 2010:
Project development – development teams will undergo training in June and work full-time during July and August to complete the project. Faculty must be available to provide feedback and content as needed.
• September 2010 – May 2011:
Project implementation and revision – development teams will monitor and assist during Fall or Spring semester when the project is used in the course. ~FAST Tex staff will assist in assessment and facilitate revisions if needed.

Research Grants
Deadline: Sept. 8, 2009
Research grants are part of the organized research program of The University of Texas at Austin. They provide research support (up to $6,000) for specific projects of individual tenured and tenure-track faculty members.
Faculty Research Assignments (FRAs) provide tenured faculty members with the equivalent of one semester's salary (based on their academic base rate during the year of the award) so that they can devote full time to research. Only tenured associate and full professors may apply for FRAs. The recipient does not teach any classes while appointed to the FRA.
Applications should be submitted to their chairs by Friday, September 4, 2009.
Summer Research Assignments (SRAs) provide tenure-track assistant professors with the equivalent of two months' salary (based on the academic base rate during the year of the award) to enable the recipient to concentrate on research and writing during the summer session. Only tenure-track assistant professors are eligible for these awards.
Applications should be submitted to their chairs by Friday, October 2, 2009
Special Research Grants (SRGs) for 2009-2010 in amounts up to $750 are awarded to tenured and tenure-track faculty throughout the year until funds are expended. Applications will be accepted beginning September 1, 2009.
University Cooperative Society Subvention Grants for 2009-2010 are awarded to faculty authors and members of the research staff (Code 1000). These grants have no submission deadline, and are available until current fiscal year funding is expended.
University Cooperative Society Undergraduate Research Fellowships (URFs) in amounts up to $1,000 are awarded through two competitions, Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. Faculty, lecturers, and full-time research scientists/engineers may supervise undergraduate students in independent research projects. The deadline for the Fall 2009 competition is September 28. The Spring 2010 deadline will be February 1, 2010.
