Co-op gift creates Student Professional Development Center

Members of the College community gathered in December to dedicate the new Student Professional Development Center, thanks to a generous gift from the University Co-Operative Society.

A $56,000 grant was awarded by the Society in 2001 to transform what had been the student lounge into the Student Professional Development Center.

The new design incorporates the previous student lounge including the three original student offices as well as three existing storage facilities. The renovation provides office space for most of the College's student organizations while still providing a relaxing environment for students to meet, study, relax, watch television, and eat. A built-in counter in the main area of the Center provides power outlets for students to work on their laptop computers. Lisa Meyer, senior administrative associate in the Dean's Office, oversaw the renovation project for the College.

At the dedication ceremony, members of the Co-op Board of Directors assisted Dean Steven Leslie in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Dean Leslie acknowledged the generous support of the Co-op as he read a permanent plaque which has been installed in the main room.

"The Co-op has a long and distinguished history of supporting students and promoting a positive image of students," said George Mitchell, Co-op president. "This year alone, we gave back $2.2 million. We are very proud that most of this money goes back to students."
