in chilly annual Explore UT open house

The College of Pharmacy joined the rest of the University in rolling out the welcome mat on March 2 for "Explore UT 2002, the Biggest Open House in Texas."

Thousands of people took advantage of the invitation and braved gusty winds and winter temperatures to see first hand the wealth of experiences and opportunities that make up the University. The College utilized the event as a student recruitment opportunity, sending posters promoting the event and letters of invitation to high school students, counselors, and science instructors throughout the state.

Many College programs qualified for continuing education credit for elementary and secondary instructors.

College programs were packaged under the theme "Follow the Pharmacy Yellow Brick Road" and most program titles referred back to some aspect of the "Wizard of Oz" classic film. For instance, a general information program on the Pharm.D. program was entitled, "Is the Pharm.D. your Emerald City?" while a session on patient assessment was termed "In Search of Tinman's Pulse." Another presentation on compounding techniques was dubbed "Powders and Potions and Pills, Oh My!" Student research projects were presented in poster presentations in a separate session entitled "Over the Rainbow Projects."

More than 250 people, most from cities and towns outside of Austin, took part in College of Pharmacy activities which were presented from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dr. Steven Leslie, dean of pharmacy, served as the university-wide chairman of Explore UT 2002, an annual university event featuring lectures, workshops, demonstrations and interactive events throughout the 40-acre campus. More than 100 College of Pharmacy students, faculty, staff, and alumni volunteered for the event.

"On March 2, we opened our doors to showcase our faculty, students and cutting-edge scientific research," Dean Leslie said. "We encouraged fellow pharmacists and prospective students to visit the College to see first hand one of the top pharmacy education programs in the nation and to learn more about exciting career options available through pharmacy."

"As in past years, we demonstrated that the University in general, and the College in particular, is a vibrant, multi-cultural community full of wonder, challenge and inquiry," Leslie said. "Explore UT promised to thrill the kid in all of us, and it certainly succeeded."

Plans are already underway for Explore UT 2003 to be held in March. Mark your calendars now, it's a great opportunity to see the best of the best of Longhorn Country.
