1940s
Roberta Wright Rylander, B.S. ‘40, was selected Woman of the Year of Katy, Tx. She has begun work with the Katy Historical Society to build a replica of her father’s drug store originally built in 1904.
Jose DeLeon, B.S. ‘49, was named Pharmacist of the Year by the Texas Pharmacy Association. The announcement was made in July at the annual TPA meeting in Galveston.

1950s
Bill C. Pittman, B.S. ‘56, of Austin, has been appointed as commissioner on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. President of Pittman Pharmacy Consulting, he has served on the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, and two terms as a member of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

1960s
Billy Woodward, B.S. '63, was named recipient of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Distinguished Practitioner in Health-System Pharmacy Award. The presentation was made at ASHP’s summer meeting in San Diego, CA. Woodward is only the third recipient of the award.

1970s
Paul F. Davis, B.S. ‘70, has been appointed executive director of the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Davis assumed the position effective June 1, 2003 to coincide with the opening of the society’s headquarters office in Austin.
Rozann Gaitan, B.S. ‘75, was named outstanding local association leader by the Texas Pharmacy Association. The announcement was made in July at the annual TPA meeting in Galveston.

1980s
Dennis Song, B.S. ‘82, was named recipient of the Innovative Practice Award at the Texas Pharmacy Association Annual Meeting in Galveston in July.
Carol Balmer, Pharm.D. ‘82, is part of a trio of faculty members from the University of Colorado recently cited for honorable mention awards by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Her teaching project is entitled, “A Distance Learning Drug Information Preceptorship.”

1990s
Trista Canales Collins, B.S. ‘92, and husband, Michael, proudly announce the arrival of their second son, Dylan Joshua Collins, born on Trista’s birthday, April 30, 2003. At birth, he weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19.5 inches long. So far, he looks much like big brother Ryan, 2.5 years. Trista will return to work for Sam’s Club Pharmacies in the fall.
Gordon Sacks, Pharm.D. ‘92, has been appointed to the Specialty Council on Nutrition Support Pharmcy of the American Pharmaceutical Association.
Kent M. Nelson, Pharm.D. ‘93, has been appointed to the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties of the American Pharmaceutical Association.
Kate Ingemann Johnston, B.S. ‘93, and husband, Dennis, announce the birth of their daughter, Sarah Marie, on Nov. 16, 2002. She weighed 7 lbs. 5 oz. and was 20.25 inches long at birth.
Michael Smith, B.S. ‘94, M.S. ‘99, Ph.D. ‘02, joined the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy in August 2002 as an assistant professor.
Carol Reagan, B.S. ‘94 and Pharm.D. ‘00, announces the birth of her first grandchild, Merit McPherson, born to Brooke and Bill McPherson on May 12, 2003. Baby Merit weighed 6 lbs. 1 oz. at birth and was 18.5 inches long.
Apurva J. Patel, B.S. ‘95, has been promoted to Austin district pharmacy manager for Walgreens.
Jeff Carson, B.S. ‘96, and wife Amy announce the arrival of son, Ryan Connor Carson, born June 26, 2003. Proud grandparents include Beverly and John Carson, B.S. ‘64. The Carson families make their homes in San Antonio.

2000s
Candace Smith, Pharm.D. ‘01, recently married Mark Garwood. Candace is now an adjunct assistant clinical professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.
Nikesh Candu Patel, Pharm.D. ‘01, has been awarded a $36,000 20-month predoctoral fellowship in health outcomes by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association Foundation. A total of seven awards were made to faculty and predoctoral and postdoctoral candidates enrolled at colleges and schools of pharmacy for 2003.

In Memory
• Stephanie Dietert, B.S. ‘76, died July 2, 2003. She was a leader in the profession of pharmacy throughout her professional career.
• Vicente "Beau" Briones, PharmD ‘01, of Santa Rosa, Texas died August 1, 2003.
