Remembering Alfred Martin (1919 - 2003)

Alfred Martin, the C.R. Sublett Professor Emeritus of the UT Austin College of Pharmacy, died May 12, 2003 in Houston after a prolonged illness.


Educated at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and Purdue University, Dr. Martin joined the UT Austin pharmacy faculty in 1973. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he served as director of the Drug Dynamics Institute from its founding in 1973 through 1978.


A pioneer in physical pharmacy, Dr. Martin was author of the first textbook in the field entitled “Physical Pharmacy - Physical Chemical Principles in Pharmaceutical Science.” He authored the widely used text through four editions beginning in 1962.


He was well respected throughout his professional career and was honored with numerous recognitions including the Ebert Medal, an annual research award of the American Pharmaceutical Association; Research Achievement of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences; the Julius Sturmer Memorial Lecture Award of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, the Rho Chi Award and the Kauffman Lecture Award of Ohio State University.
