Student Athena Brand has been elected a regional delegate for Region VI of the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP). She was sworn into office at the APhA-ASP Region VI Midyear Regional Meeting in November.
In her new position, she will be one of three student officers for Region VI representing 15 colleges of pharmacy spanning six states including Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
She will be responsible for keeping colleges within the region connected through periodic newsletters. In addition, she will meet with delegates from other regions in January to review a list of resolutions passed by the different regions.
"In essence, we rank about 200 resolutions from across the nation to represent the ones for which we feel our respective regions feel the strongest," she explained. "When we convene in January, we compare rankings and decide which resolutions represent the entire nation best."
Resolutions selected by the delegates are rephrased and sent to the annual meeting where the entire student academy will vote on them. Those that are passed will go into a book of resolutions that APhA supports and works toward achieving.
As a candidate for the position, she presented an introductory speech at a policy proposal forum and a second speech at the closing business session. In addition, she had to pass an exam on APhA-ASP policy process and participate in a meet the candidates question and answer session.
