Frei to Lead Division
Dr. Chris Frei has been appointed as division head for the college's Pharmacotherapy Division which is located on the UT Health Science Center San Antonio campus.
Frei, an associate professor of pharmacy, has served the college within the division since January 2006. His appointment was announced by Dean Lynn Crimson who called Frei "an outstanding scientist, scholar, teacher and leader."
In his research lab, Frei studies clinically important infectious diseases including pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections and HIV. Of particular focus in his research is methicillin resistant staphylococcus (MRSA). He has been recognized internationally for advancing knowledge in the field of MRSA.
Frei's research focuses on emerging antibiotic resistance among Gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus. His research approach involves pharmacoepidemiology, comparative-effectiveness, and microbial genomics. He has been a principal investigator/co-investigator for 15 different studies supported by NIH, the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, and the pharmaceutical industry.
In addition to his appointment with the UT College of Pharmacy, he holds a joint faculty position in the School of Medicine at UTHSCSA. He completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree (2001) Master's degree (2003), residency (2003), and post-doctoral training (2005) at UT Austin and the UT Health Science Center. He is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist.
In 2011, Frei was recognized as "Mentor of the Year" by the Texas Society of Health System Pharmacists, "Young Investigator of the Year" by the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, and "Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year" by the UT Austin College of Pharmacy.
Dr. Leroy Knodel, who has served as interim head of the division, will continue his role as assistant division head with focus on management of the Pharm.D. program in San Antonio.
