The College of Pharmacy celebrated a convocation ceremony for Pharm.D. degree candidates on Friday, May 17, 2013 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony was held in the Bass Concert Hall at the Performing Arts. Rear Admiral Scott F. Giberson, U.S. Assistant Surgeon General, provided the commencement address.
A total of 117 were hooded during the ceremony including 113 who completed their studies for May graduation and four additional students with anticipation of August graduation.
Several students received special recognition including officers for the Class of 2013 – Jobby John, president; Pearl Rajan, vice president; and Anne Nguyen, secretary/treasurer.
Joy Martindale was recognized for having the highest grade point average while Melissa Hartman was announced as having the second highest GPA.
Awards for outstanding research were presented to Ross Phan and Juliana Taliaferro while Angela Chen, Chris Hernandez, and Barbara Lucke were cited for excellence in patient care. Jose Barrera, Jessica Gomez, and Juliann Horne received honors for dedicated service while Grace Mbagwu, Chris Perling, Pearl Rajan and Sumon Sen were recognized for exemplary leadership.
The College of Pharmacy Alumni Association presented its Mortar and Pestle Award for leadership, service, patient care and research to Athena Hobbs, Jobby John and Anne Nguyen.
The event marked the 10th anniversary of the first graduates from the El Paso Cooperative Program.
Graduate students completing their studies within the college were honored at a reception on Saturday, May 18.
