Pharmaceutics Team Wins First Place Award
A pharmaceutics research team from The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy has taken a first place award at this year's ExcipientFest Americas meeting in Puerto Rico.
Dr. Jason McConville, assistant professor of pharmaceutics, and his graduate student, Javier Morales, captured the first place award for their research poster presentations at the international gathering in April. The event draws pharmaceutical scientists and industry members from across the Americas. Their research poster focused on formulation of buccal films for local and/or systemic delivery and was entitled "Manufacture and Characterization of Natural Polymer Based Films as Buccal Delivery Systems."
The poster describes formulation studies for renewable ingredients that will result in a patient compliant drug product that may be administered by placing the medicine against the inner cheek where a high concentration of blood vessels enables a high absorption rate. This process of drug administration through the cheek holds promise of improved drug effectiveness by avoiding the first pass metabolism of drugs by the liver.
