Navarrete Named to APhA Immunization Award
Dr. Jacquelyn Navarrete, clinical assistant professor with the UT Austin/UT El Paso Cooperative Pharmacy Program, has been named as the national winner of the Immunization Champion Award-Partnership presented by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). More than 80 nominations were received from across the nation.
The award will be presented to Navarrete at the APhA 2013 Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 3, 2013 in Los Angeles, CA. She will receive the Crystal Award and an honorarium of $500.
Her collaboration with an interdisciplinary team has provided a valuable model to increase Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination rates for other student health centers and their pharmacies. Addressing prevention is critical as college students begin to make their own decisions about health and wellness. Under Navarrete's leadership, the UT El Paso's Student Health Center provides surveys to the university population to assess gaps in knowledge and what information the university students are seeking. The Student Health Center staff is starting to provide presentations to sororities and fraternities on the UTEP campus about the benefits of HPV vaccination.
