College Welcomes Class of 2012
The College of Pharmacy welcomes the entering class of 2012 on Monday, August 25 for the first day of New Student Orientation.
Members of the entering class will have an opportunity to acquaint themselves with one another and get to know the team of upperclassmen, faculty and staff who have worked to make certain their welcome is a warm one. During the week, the new pharmacy scholars learn about college curriculum, the history of the profession, and professional development opportunities through a myriad of activities scheduled throughout the week. Social breaks afford them the opportunity to bond as a class.
One of the highlights of the week is the annual White Coat Ceremony. Parents, family members, and friends are invited to the program that begins at 4 p.m. Monday in the Texas Union Ballroom. At the ceremony, members of the Class of 2012 take their first step toward becoming professional pharmacists by putting on, for the first time, the pharmacy white coat, one of the hallmarks of pharmacy professionalism.
On Tuesday evening, the students will join their counterparts from throughout The University of Texas at Austin in attending Gone to Texas, the traditional celebration that marks the beginning of a new academic year. Each August on the evening before fall classes begin, new students are invited to celebrate their fresh start at the UT Tower with live music and a broad spectrum of presentations from across campus.
The celebration draws its name from the actions of pioneer families more than 100 years ago who pulled up stakes seeking a fresh start. On their old homestead doors, they revealed their destination by etching three letters "GTT" Gone to Texas.
