  1. Meena's speech to Pharmacy Council
    1. Pharmacy Council President Inauguration Speech 4/3/2007

Dear Fellow students, faculty and staff,

It is my great honor to stand before you as your President of Pharmacy Council for the 2007-2008 school year.

It is said that a person has enough energy in his or her body to light up the city for one whole week.   From the looks of the people in this classroom, we have enough energy to light up Austin for one whole year.   Each and everyone of has potential energy to make a difference in the world, in our profession, and in our community.   As your President, I will strive to encourage future leaders to use that energy to find their passion.   Over the past year and half, I was given the gift to see this organization grow under the efforts of such fine Executive member as Grace, Nishi, Frank, Stephanie, Sue Li, and Erika.   I have seen this organization from many different standpoints: through the eyes of a class representative, a committee co-chair, and as a member of exec.   I have utterly enjoyed being Grace's shadow and will greatly miss the experience I had as President-elect.

After the passing away of Eric Hultberg, our previous past president of Pharmacy Council, it was a wake-up call for many of us in the College of Pharmacy.   Eric was a leader on the up-swing that had accomplished so much during such a short period of time at the College.   He was an inspiration to many, and he was my wake-up call to step up and ask myself, "What mark do I want to leave when I leave this College or this world?" What do I want people to say about me, when I am no longer of this Earth?   These are two questions that I ask myself and have gotten me thus far as the person you see standing in front of you today.

They say that once you've found your passion in life grades start slipping.   I guess it is safe to say that I've found my passion as serving as a leader of this College, you can think what you want of the grades.   From attending the Senate of College Council meetings over the past semester, I have seen how the Pharmacy Council works as compared to other schools.   Although our numbers are small, I strongly believe we are a model Council on the University of Texas at Austin Campus.   I will strive to uphold the honor of this College at the University level and make sure that our presence is known.

There are many things we can learn from our professors here at the College. Mr. Arlyn Klosel always says "You never have a second chance to make a first impression." Thus, we must present ourselves in the best way possible.   Arlyn also says, "You know what you've done in the past, just keep going."   As a first year student at the College, it was a big blow to my ego when I was not as successful as I was in undergrad.   As a Council, we will go through good times and bad times, but through these hardships, we will learn from these situations and find a means to better ourselves for the future.   Dean Diane Ginsburg's wisdom has told us that we should never burn our bridges.   Pharmacy is a small world and we must work together effectively to strive to achieve a common goal of promoting our profession.   Every year when Dr. Karboski is giving his Clinical Midyear spiel, one thing always stands out.   He says that no matter where you are or what you do, you are always being interviewed.   It's a sad concept, but very true.   Thus, just remember, that you are and always will be a representative of this Council and a leader of this College.   For this reason, I charge you to go out there and make a positive impression about what we are as a whole.    Lastly, I will leave you with the words of Dr. Combs.   He says, "Pharmacy is an Octopus."   I would like to change it up by saying "Pharmacy Council is an Octopus."   Every organ, every tentacle, and every sliver of the octopus have to work together to make sure that the organism can function as a whole.   Thus, each and every one of you is a vital part of this Council.   Each and every student of this College is welcome to his or her say in issues.   Each and every one of you is a cell in that Octopus and the future of this Octopus/Council lies in your hands.
