On January 1, 2012 at about 2:46 AM, 9-1-1 received a call of a woman found seriously injured in her home in the 3100 block of King Street. The woman was pronounced deceased and has since been identified as Esmeralda Barrera, H/F, 08/05/1982. There are no suspects in custody and the Austin Police Department is requesting information from the public about the murder or from anyone who saw Ms. Barrera on New Year’s Eve or during the early morning hours of January 1, 2012.

The Austin Police Department is also investigating two other incidents that occurred in the early morning hours on January 1, 2012 in the area of W. 31st and King Street. At about 2:18am, a woman out walking was assaulted by an unknown male subject in the 3100 block of King Street. This occurred about 30 minutes before the murder in the 3100 block of King Street. Later that morning, a woman was attacked in her home in the 300 block of E. 31st Street by an unknown male subject. The male subject fled the home after injuring the woman during the attack.

We do not know yet if the three incidents are related, but we are releasing information on all three incidents in hopes of alerting the public and also receiving information from the public. The victim in the attack from the 3100 block of King Street was able to provide information for a composite and a physical/clothing description of her attacker. The suspect from the attack in the 3100 block of King Street is described as:

Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect in the composite or about any of the three incidents occurring in the area of W. 31st and King Street during the early morning hours of January 1, 2012 is asked to call the Homicide Tip Line at 477-3588 or Crimestoppers at 472-TIPS.
