CURRENT FRAUD ALERT

The victim will get a telephone call from a subject who identifies himself as an AT&T or telephone company service technician. Offender states that he is conducting a telephone line test and to complete the test the victim has to punch certain buttons on their telephone in a certain order and then hang up. By following the offender's directions, the victim gives full access to their telephone line, which enables offender to place long distance telephone calls that are billed to the victim's telephone number. This scam has been originating from many local jails and prisons.

Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building, 200 East Dean Keeton

Occurred between 4-2-03 at 10:00 p.m. and 4-3-02 at 8:00 a.m.

Theft: The handle was pulled off a desk drawer in a second floor office and $24.00 cash was stolen from a snack sales fund.

Claudia Taylor Johnson Hall, 210 West 6th Street

Occurred on 4-6-03 at 4:00 a.m.

Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found passed out on the south side steps of the building due to alcohol poisoning.

McCombs School of Business, 2110 Speedway

Occurred on 4-2-03 between 10:00 p.m. and 10:05 p.m.

Theft: A blue nylon canvas Timberland backpack was stolen from a 5th floor study table after it was left unattended for 5 minutes. The backpack contained a textbook titled "Shield of Achilles" by Shilip Bobbitt and a black TI financial calculator. Loss value: 50.00.

Beauford H. Jester Center East, 203 East 21st Street

Occurred between 9-1-02 and 3-25-03/

Theft (Criminal Episode): Two residents in a seventh floor dormitory room reported that between September 1, 2002 and March 25th, 2003 they noticed that someone had made numerous unauthorized charges on their Longhorn Dining Dollar cards between the hours of 12 midnight and 8:00 am even though their cards were inside their locked dormitory room while they sleep. A UT student gave UT police a written statement that indicated involvement in these thefts. Loss value undetermined at this time.

Beauford H. Jester Center West, 201 East 21st

Occurred between 3-28-03 at 4:00 p.m. and 4-3-03 at 7:45 a.m.

Criminal Mischief: Two 8" × 8" pieces of gold carpet were removed from a 1st floor hallway. The first floor hallway is carpeted in blue with various sizes, shapes and colors of accent pieces with the gold pieces being part of these. Repair cost: $100.00.

Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium, 707 Clyde Littlefield

Occurred on 4-5-03 at 10:30 a.m.

Solicitation / Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was identified attempting to sell 6 counterfeit tickets to the UIL track meet that was currently being held in the stadium. Subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning.

Parking Lot 103, 2100 Comal Street

Discovered on 4-5-03 at 3:25 a.m.

Criminal Mischief: UT police found a vehicle parked in the southwest side of the Parking Lot with its rear window broken out. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle. Repair cost: $200.00.

Parking Lot 104, 1900 North IH-35

Discovered on 4-5-03 at 3:53 a.m.

Criminal Mischief: UT police found a vehicle parked in the northeast corner of the Parking Lot with its interior dome light on. The right front window had been broken out and the in-dash CD player had been partly removed. Repair cost: $300.00.

Parking Lot 110, 2200 Comal Street

Occurred on 4-3-03 at 11:20 a.m.

Criminal Mischief: A UT employee observed a Hispanic male behind the wheel of a light silver-bluish colored late 80's or early 90's Audi (or similar body style) parked along the west curbline of Leona with the engine running. The witness then observed two Hispanic subjects inside a vehicle in the Parking Lot. The witness knew the owner of the vehicle was not Hispanic. When they saw the witness they exited the vehicle and got into the Audi and the Audi left the area at a high rate of speed. The vehicle did not have a front license plate but did display a rear license plate. The first three digits were either NP1 or N51. The driver was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 20 years of age, with a stocky "round" head. The second subject was described as younger, approximately 5'6" with a thin build. The third subject was described as taller than 5'6". An examination of the parked vehicle revealed that the housing around the steering column was broken and in pieces. Repair cost: $300.00.

Robert A. Welch Hall, 105 East 24th Street

Occurred on 4-2-03 between 12 noon and 12:30 p.m.

Theft: A brown leather bi-fold wallet was stolen from a backpack, which was beside the owner, who was asleep in a second floor hallway. The wallet contained assorted credit cards and identification. Loss value: $10.00.

Roberts Hall Dormitory, 303 East 21st Street

Occurred on 4-5-03 between 7:35 a.m. and 7:40 a.m.

Harassing Communication: An unknown male subject who called himself "Jason" made repeated annoying telephone calls to a 1st floor dormitory room. The resident was reminded to use the "Star 57" feature on her dormitory telephone, which would trace the call.

San Jacinto Residence Hall, 309 East 21st Street

Occurred between 4-2-03 at 5:30 p.m. and 4-3-03 at 1:00 p.m.

Criminal Mischief: A small flame that might have been produced by a cigarette lighter made multiple burn marks along the wood trim of a marble table that was located in the North Tower's 1st floor east loggia. Repair cost: $200.00.

1900 Speedway

Occurred on 4-3-03 at 4:20 p.m.

Soliciting / Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was found panhandling along the west side of the street. Subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning.

Union Building, #4 West Mall

Occurred on 4-3-03 between 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Graffiti: Words were carved into a marble wall of a men's restroom in the Underground area. Repair cost: $200.00.

Union Building, #4 West Mall

Occurred on 4-4-03 between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Graffiti: Words were carved into a wooden door that was located in a 3rd floor men's restroom. Repair cost: $100.00.

Union Building, #4 West Mall

Discovered on 4-5-03 at 2:00 a.m.

Graffiti: A word was carved on the exterior side of a wooden door that was located on the 1st floor. Repair cost: $200.00.

Union Building, #4 West Mall

Occurred on 4-6-03 between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Graffiti: Letters were carved into a wooden door that was located in a men's restroom in the Underground area. Repair cost: $50.00.
