SCAM ALERT

A scam came to our attention this morning. Apparently, a thief will contact students claiming to be with a governmental institution that handles federal grants/ cholarships. The thief will request your bank account information to process your financial aid/grants/scholarship money. The thief will then use your bank account information to empty your bank account and possibly establish credit accounts with credit card companies in your name. Don't let this happen to you. Do not give your personal information or bank account information to anyone you did not contact. If someone calls and asks you for such information, request their contact information including the company/department they are calling on behalf of. After obtaining such information, hang the telephone up and, if you are on a campus telephone, use the *57 feature to trap the phone number of the person who called you. Do your homework: investigate the company the person claimed to be with. You can check and verify many companies and governmental offices via a telephone book and the internet. Always remember: if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. Do not provide your personal information. Contact the police department.
