Administrative Message
It has come to the attention of The University of Texas at Austin Police Department that a variety of other publications use snippets from the Campus Watch to print in their periodicals. While we appreciate their efforts to aid us in spreading the valuable message that is crime prevention, we want our subscribers to know that the police department has no editorial control over the exact wording, paraphrasing or photographic content used in their final print version.

Art Building and Museum, 2301 San Jacinto Blvd.

Occurred on 5-2-05 between 8:10 a.m. and 9:45 a.m.

Theft: A plastic display box containing 25 pieces of small artwork was stolen from a 5th floor stairwell wall. Loss value: $150.00.

F. Loren Winship Drama Building, 300 East 23rd Street

Occurred on 5-1-05 between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Theft: A Kona Stinky bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the east side of the building. Loss value: $300.00.

Crime Prevention Tip

Cable locks can easily be cut with a pair of bolt cutters. For bicycle security, UTPD recommends, at the very least, a u-lock that uses a standard key or a combination lock — do not purchase a u-lock that has a round key hole. Our maximum recommendation is the use of a u-lock and a cable lock at the same time. As always, you should register your bicycle online.

Perry-Castañeda Library, 101 East 21st Street

Occurred on 5-2-05 between 6:20 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Theft: A Toshiba Satellite laptop computer was stolen from a secured 5th floor locker. The locker had been secured with a combination pad lock which was left at the scene. Loss value: $1,400.00.

Crime Prevention Tip

Do not trust the security of your property to a combination lock. Key operated pad locks provide better security.

500 East 23rd Street

Occurred on 5-2-05 at 6:00 p.m.

Possession of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (3 counts): A non-UT subject was stopped for speeding more than twice the posted speed limit while driving a Chevrolet 4-door. Two other non-UT subjects were passengers inside the vehicle. A plastic cup containing 10 Diazepam (Valium) pills and a cigar packed with marijuana was found inside the vehicle. One of the passengers claimed ownership of the pills.

Crime Prevention Tip
