Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The left rear opera window was broken out of a 2001 Saturn 4-door while it was parked in the east side of the Parking Lot. The vehicles glove compartment appeared to have been rummaged through. The dashboard was pulled away from the vehicles frame. The vehicle was missing its in-dashboard stereo. At this time, the owner of the vehicle has not made a police report. Repair cost: $175. Loss value: Unknown at this time.

Crime Prevention Tip:

Most auto burglars do not want to risk getting caught breaking into a vehicle if they can not see anything worth stealing. To keep your car windows from being broken out of your car, make sure you remove everything from the inside of your vehicle whenever you park. To conceal your stereo system, simply place a beach towel across your dashboard, as if you were trying to protect the dashboard from the Texas sun. Allow the beach towel to drape down over your stereo system.

24th Street and Speedway

Occurred on 10-4-05 at 2:10 PM.

Disorderly Conduct: A UT student ran a stop sign while riding a bicycle. A police officer, in a marked patrol vehicle was forced to apply the vehicles brakes in an effort to avoid striking the bicyclist. In response to the application of the police vehicles air horn, the student extended the middle finger of his right hand at the police officer.

Crime Prevention Tip:

I am going to do my best to avoid the obvious with this case. Instead, I want to point out that bicycles are vehicles. As such, they are required to abide by all of the same traffic laws as a motor vehicle. Running a stop sign on a bicycle can cause a tragic collision. It does not take a math wizard to know that a vehicle greatly outweighs a bicycle. So bicyclist, heed all traffic signs and signals.
