Gregory Gym, 2101 Speedway

Occurred on 03-21-06 between 9:30 PM and 10:05 PM.

Theft: A black and blue Eastpack backpack containing a 15 G4 Powerbook laptop computer and two paperback books was stolen when it was left inside an unsecured 2nd floor mens locker room locker. Loss value: $1,300.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

Thieves have an all too easy time defeating pad locks to steal from lockers. You should not make it even easier by leaving your property unsecured. While a keyed padlock is better than a combination padlock, a combination pad lock is better than no lock at all. Lets throw some math at this; if there are 50 thieves who commit thefts from lockers, but only half of those can defeat a pad lock, then that means you protected your property from half of the thieves who prey upon those who leave their property unsecured. Invest a few dollars in a padlock to protect your thousands of dollars worth of property.

Homer Rainey Hall, 200 West 21st Street

Occurred on 03-21-06 between 3:15 PM and 3:30 PM.

Theft: $700.00 cash was stolen from a wallet that had fallen out of the owners pocket after the owners class. An unidentified subject turned the wallet into the Main Building Information Desk. The subject who turned the wallet in advised he discovered the wallet in Rainey Hall. The subject stated he did not know who owned the wallet as he did not open it. The subject who turned the wallet in was described as a Hispanic male, with a light complexion, black hair and wearing a cream colored shirt. Loss value: $700.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

There are a couple of tips I would like to point out in this entry. First and foremost, make it a habit to carry only the items you need to carry. The $700 in this case was designated for the owners rent. Keep your cash in the bank and use a check to pay your rent. If you still prefer to pay in cash, then keep the cash in a secure location until the moment you actually go to make your payment. To keep your wallet from falling out of your pocket, or even from being pick-pocketed consider carrying your wallet in a front pocket. You can also wrap a rubber-band around your wallet to create a little friction between your wallet and pocket.

Main Building, #1 South Mall

Discovered on 03-21-06 at 7:41 AM.

Perry-Castañeda Library, 101 East 21st Street

Occurred on 03-21-06 between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

Theft: A black backpack containing two textbooks, two paperback novels and a wallet with $10.00 cash, two identification cards, two debit cards and a credit card was stolen when it was left in an unsecured 1st floor computer lab. Loss value: $220.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

While the time frame of this theft is 4 hours, keep in mind a theft of unsecured and unattended property only takes a few seconds. Never leave your property unattended and unsecured.
