Belmont Hall, 2109 San Jacinto

Occurred between 4-20-06 at 3:30 PM and 4-21-06 at 9:30 AM.

Theft: A UT staff member reported the theft of $180.00 in cash from an unsecured desk located inside a secured 6th floor office. Loss value: $180.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

Many office thefts occur due to the area being left unsecured, or the property being left in plain sight. In some cases the theft is due to loss of key control. The reporting person in this case stated there are only 3 authorized keys issued. This is not the case. Several additional keys were located in the Locks and Keys records. To maintain key control consider the following: Start with an audit of all the issued keys within your department. This audit will include all keys that have been reported lost or stole to Locks and Keys. If practical re-key. Next develop a departmental policy that requires all students, staff and faculty members to return all issued keys to their supervisor.

Occurred on 4-25-06 at 1:30 PM.

Indecent Exposure: A non UT subject was observed on the second floor sitting on a couch exposing an erect penis as a female UT student walked by. The UT student left the area and contacted the UT police department. A second UT student observed the same subject leaving the building through the west doors and ride away on a red bicycle. The subject is described as: black male, 5'6" with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and jeans. Both students were shown a photo line up and positively identified the suspect. The suspect is the same individual that has been involved in similar indecent exposure cases at the Law School.

Theft: The front tire of a Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from a secured bicycle located on the west side of Parlin Hall. Loss value: $50.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

The importance of a two lock locking system could not have been dramatized any better. Both victims utilized a U-shaped lock. One victim secured only the front tire, while the other secure only her bicycle. Many bicycle thieves will marry parts from different bicycles in order to steal one bicycle. With a two lock locking system a thief is forced to use two different tools to defeat a U-shaped lock and a thick self locking cable. But as the owner you are ensuring that the bicycle is secured to a bike rack and that the main parts(tires) of the bicycle are also secured. Two victimsone bike.
