Blanton Museum of Art, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd.

Occurred on 5-14-06, between 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM.

Theft: A silver Canon digital video camcorder was reported stolen after being left unattended in the bottom storage rack of a baby stroller. The victim stated that he had observed an unknown male subject standing beside the baby stroller while he was looking at the paintings. The subject is described as: Dark skinned male with an olive complexion, 5'10", medium build, dark hair (conservative haircut). Loss value: $175.00.

Chemical Petroleum Engineering, 200 East Dean Keeton

Discovered on 5-16-06, at 9:13 AM

Burglary of Coin-Operated Machine: A feminine products dispensing machine, located inside a first floor restroom, was discovered damaged. Loss value: Unknown at this time.

Gregory Gym, 2101 Speedway

Occurred between 5-13-06, at 12:01 PM and 5-16-06, at 3:00 PM.

Theft: A black and red K2 mountain bicycle was stolen from the bicycle racks located on the west side of the building after being left unsecured. Loss value: $200.00.

Kinsolving Dormitory, 2605 Whitis Ave.

Occurred on 5-16-06, at 9:34 AM.

Suspicious Person: A UT staff member observed an unknown subject in the bicycle racks located on the west side of the dormitory pulling on cable locks. The subject left the area in somewhat of a hurry when he realized he was being watched. The subject was described as: Black male, 30 years of age, 5'5", 150 lbs., and a thin build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, white T-shirt, and white tennis shoes. He was carrying a dark colored backpack.

McCombs Softball Stadium, 2001 Comal

Occurred between 04-06 and 05-06.

Harassment: A UT student reported receiving unwanted and unsolicited harassing telephone calls on her cellular telephone from an unknown subject. The subject had even contacted her parents asking them for additional contact information for summer employment.

Robert A. Welch Hall, 105 East 24th Street

Occurred on 5-16-06, at 3:18 PM.

Suspicious Person: A non-UT subject was observed pulling on door handles and looking into various chemistry labs located on the 5th floor. During the investigation, the reporting person stated that he had seen the same subject on 5-13-06, pulling on door handles. The subject was located as he was leaving a 5th floor men's room. The subject told the officers that he was looking for ideas for his artwork and was trying to view laboratory equipment. The officer issued him a written criminal trespass warning and escorted him from the area. The subject is described as: White male, 38 years of age, 5'10", 159 lbs., brown hair, and brown eyes. He was carrying an overstuffed book bag.

San Jacinto Residence Hall, 309 East 21st Street

Occurred between 5-15-06, at 9:00 PM and 5-16-06, at 1:00 PM.

Theft: A white Willis jewelry box, containing a 16" strand of pearls, pearl earrings, and an 18" gold chain with a pearl drop pendant were stolen from a secured 5th floor dormitory room. Loss value: $1,550.00.

Waggener Hall, 2210 Speedway

Occurred on 5-16-06, between 10:30 AM and 10:35 AM.

Theft: A white Apple iBook laptop computer was stolen from an unsecured first floor office. Loss value: $600.00.

100 Block 21st Street

Occurred on 5-16-06, at 2:26 PM.

Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed attempting to solicit money from a pedestrian on the south side of GSB. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written criminal trespass warning and escorted him from the area.

200 Block East Dean Keeton

Occurred between 5-06-06, at 10:00 AM and 5-16-06, at 4:45 PM.

Theft: After being secured with a cable lock, a green Diamondback mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located under the pedestrian bridge. Loss value: $100.00.

Crime Prevention Tip of the Day:

Over the past few days, I have received a number of inquires from students, as well as parents, about apartments and apartment safety. I would like to provide the following as a guide when hunting for an apartment.

Apartment-Hunters' Checklist

  • Is the property in a safe neighborhood? __ Yes __ No
  • To research crime statistics of different Austin neighborhoods, go to the Austin Police Departments website: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/default.html.
  • Are address numbers clearly visible? __ Yes __ No
  • Are public areas well lit? __ Yes __ No
  • Are parking spaces marked with apartment numbers? __ Yes __ No
  • Are shrubs and trees around the property well maintained? __ Yes __ No
  • What is the time frame for completion of repair work?
  • When was the last fire marshal inspection?
  • Does the apartment/house have a working smoke detector? __ Yes __ No
  • Do doors and windows have sturdy locks? __ Yes __No
  • Does the front door have a secondary lock that is only accessible from inside the apartment/house? __ Yes __ No
  • Does the front door have a peephole/door viewer? __ Yes __ No
  • Are locks on the doors changed / rekeyed with each new resident? __ Yes __ No
  • Who has access to your apartment/house key other than you?
  • Does the apartment complex have video surveillance cameras in common areas? __ Yes __ No

Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 5 alarm calls, 7 unsecured door reports, 1 medical emergency call, and 3 suspicious activity reports, between 05-16-06 and 05-17-06.
