CHAPTER 1. FACULTY GOVERNANCE
The University of Texas at Austin Policy Memorandum 1.502 Office of the President September 1, 1998Subject: STANDING COMMITTEES OF THE GENERAL FACULTY -- STUDENT SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES COMMITTEES
The Handbook of Operating Procedures (see IV of Chapter 1) contains a description of the categories and general membership requirements of the standing committees of the General Faculty. The details of composition and membership of the standing committees categorized as student services and activities committees are given below.
- 1. FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS, COMMITTEE ON
- Composition. Five members of the General Faculty, representing five colleges or schools, and five students (four undergraduate and one graduate), including at least two who are receiving, or have received, financial aid from the Office of Student Financial Services. Four of the students shall be appointed by the President from a panel of not less than ten nominees submitted by the Student Government; the fifth student shall be appointed by the President from a panel of not less than five nominees submitted by the chair of the Graduate Student Assembly. Faculty members and student members shall serve for two year staggered terms beginning on the first class day of the Fall Semester. In addition, every year the Chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two General Faculty members of the Faculty Council for one-year terms as members of the committee. The committee shall elect its own chair and vice chair, who shall be members of the General Faculty. The Director of Student Financial Services, a representative of the Dean of Students, and a representative from the Office of Graduate Studies shall serve as administrative advisers without vote. The President may appoint additional non-voting administrative advisors from the general administration areas of The University
- Function. To initiate and review policies and procedures; to hear appeals from decisions of the Office of Student Financial Services.
- 2. RECREATIONAL SPORTS COMMITTEE
- Composition. Twelve members, including six members of the General Faculty and one member of The University staff, appoitned by the President for two-year terms; two students, a male and a female, designated by the Councils of Recreational Sports and appointed by the President for one-year terms; two other students, a male and a female, designated by the Student Government and appointed by the President for one-year terms; and one member of The University staff designated by the Non-Student Program and appointed by the President to serve as a member without vote for a one-year term. In addition, every year the Chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two members of the Faculty Council for one-year terms as members of the committee. The committee shall elect its own chair and vice chair, who shall be members of the General Faculty. The Director of Recreational Sports shall serve as an administrative advisor without vote.
- Function. To determine policy for the conduct of the intramural programs; to approve and authorize publication of all rules and regulations governing intramural sports; to hear appeals of decisions of the Councils of Recreational Sports; and to promulgate regulations designating the faculty and staff members and other persons who are entitled to participate in the faculty and staff competitive and recreational programs.
- 3. STUDENT AFFAIRS, COMMITTEE ON
- Composition. Nine members of the General Faculty, including the chairs of the five Standing Committees of the General Faculty dealing with functions under the supervision of the Vice President for Student Affairs (Admissions and Registration Committee, Calendar Committee, Committee on Financial Aid to Students, Recreational Sports Committee, and Recruitment and Retention Committee), and two student representatives. In addition, every year the Chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two members of the Faculty Council for one-year terms as members of the committee. The committee shall elect its own chair and vice chair, who shall be members of the General Faculty. Administrators representing the various offices dealing with student services and activities shall serve as advisors as necessary without votes.
- Function. To advise the Vice President for Student Affairs on all functions of the office.
