CHAPTER 3. FACULTY AND ACADEMICS

The University of Texas at Austin Policy Memorandum 3.115
Office of the President August 9, 1976 (revised)

Subject: SALARY POLICY FOR INDIVIDUALS HOLDING BOTH FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATIVE APPOINTMENTS

The following statement explains the policy for establishing academic salary rates and administrative salary rates for individuals who hold both faculty and administrative appointments. It applies to executive officers, assistants to executive officers, deans, associate deans, assistant deans, and directors. It does not apply to department chairmen.

I. The administrative salary rate (12-month rate) will be based on the evaluation of the duties and responsibilities of the administrative position, and on the qualifications and performance of the individual who serves in the position.

II. The academic salary rate (9-month rate) will be based on the individual's academic qualifications and will be determined by using the same criteria and procedures as are applicable in determining the salary rate of other faculty members.

III. The administrative salary rate (12-month rate) and the academic salary rate (9-month rate) shall not necessarily be related, and the percent time appointment distribution between the administrative position and the faculty position will be determined by the President. The amount of annual payment will be determined by using the appropriate rate for each appointment. There will be no "12-month total" salary except as computed from the separate rates.

IV. Funds released by the appointment of a U.T. Austin faculty member to any administrative position will be retained in the academic department and may be used for the employment of a temporary replacement. These funds may not be used to employ an additional faculty member on a permanent basis.
