The University of Texas at Austin Policy Memorandum 3.127 Office of the President October 1, 1987Subject: RECRUITMENT TO TENURED AND TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITIONS
Prior approval and review procedures for recruitment processes for appointments to tenured and tenure-track faculty positions are necessary for orderly planning of recruitment efforts and to ensure that each recruitment is consistent with faculty staffing goals of the departments, colleges, and University.
- 1. Authorization of Faculty Recruitment
No candidate for appointment to a tenured or tenure-track faculty position may be interviewed until the dean of the college/school has approved the recruitment request.
- Requests to initiate recruitment to a tenured or tenure-track faculty position must be submitted in writing by the department chairman to the dean of the college/school for prior approval. The request must be accompanied by:
- a) the proposed position title;
- b) a description of the academic area or specialty that the position is to serve;
- c) an outline of the search procedure, including the major methods to be used to identify qualified applicants and a draft copy of any advertisement that is to be used to solicit applications for the position;
- d) a description of the specific actions that will be taken to identify minority candidates for the position.
- 2. Review of Applications
- a) Applications should be reviewed and evaluated in accordance with procedures developed by the department and college/school.
- b) For tenured and tenure-track faculty appointments, the procedural requirements for extending offers of appointment as described in Policy Memorandum 3.125 shall be followed and, in addition, the Prior Approval Request must be accompanied by a completed Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty Appointment Process Summary form (see Attachment 1).
- 3) Faculty Recruitment Advisory Committee
- Colleges/schools may establish committees to advise on processes and procedures for recruitment to tenured or tenure-track faculty positions. Membership on such committees should include minority faculty from within the college/school and/or from other appropriate colleges/schools. These committees should be charged:

- b) to advise and assist the dean and the departmental search committees regarding special opportunities for minority recruitment;
- c) to provide consultation to departmental search committees; and
- d) to assess the effectiveness of faculty recruitment efforts and to make such recommendations for improvement as may be appropriate to the dean.
