CHAPTER 3. FACULTY AND ACADEMICS

The University of Texas at Austin Policy Memorandum 3.220
Office of the President July 28, 1989

Subject: LABORATORY, SUPPLEMENTAL, INCIDENTAL, AND COMPUTING REQUIRED COURSE FEES

There is a statutory limit of not less than $2.00 nor more than $30.00 per semester or summer term for a laboratory fee. A supplemental fee has no statutory limit but can only be assessed for a course in Art, Architecture, Drama, Speech or Music where individual coaching or instruction is the usual method of instruction (Section 54.501 and 54.051(1) of the Texas Education Code).

Requests for assessment and/or change in the assessment of any type of course fee must be submitted on a Course Fee Request Form (copy attached). Copies of this form may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar-Office of Official Publications.

Every Course Fee Request From must have a cost justification attached which details the costs incurred by the department for the course. The justification should include a break down of costs, the total costs for a semester, the number of students enrolled for a semester, and the cost per student per semester.

Courses which should be designated as Computing Required Courses should have a brief description of the computing service required. A cost justification is not necessary for designating courses as having the computing services fee.

Three copies of the Course Fee Request Form should be submitted through appropriate channels to the Executive Vice President and Provost and the Vice President for Business Affairs for approval and subsequent transmittal to the Office of the President. Subsequent to approval by the President the request requires approval of the Chancellor, UT System and must be reported in the docket for approval by the Board of Regents.

No fee may be assessed or collected until final approval has been granted by the Board of Regents.
