RATES OF PAY FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTS

Policy 12.C.3 "Graduate and Undergraduate Research Assistants” in the Revised Handbook of Operating Procedures describes in detail the selection and appointment of undergraduate and graduate research assistants  The salary ranges for each level of appointment are provided below.

Although latitude is permitted within the approved range, beginning appointments should normally be made at the entry level, with the upper end of the rate range reserved for more experienced employees with demonstrated competence or special qualifications.

The base annual rate will be on a 12-month basis.

Each dean shall establish salary policy, within the salary range, for appointment/ reappointment of graduate research assistants in the units under his/her jurisdiction.  Appointment of graduate research assistants is subject to approval by the dean of the college/school and the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies.

Once established for the year, the base annual rate will remain the same for the term of the appointment, except that changes in rate of pay and stipend are permitted effective January 16, in accordance with the approved salary schedule of the unit; otherwise, changes in rate of pay and stipend will be approved only for September 1 of the following academic year.

Appointments of research assistants should normally be processed a semester at a time.  Departments extending offers for periods exceeding one semester need to make clear in the notification to the student that reappointment after the first semester is contingent on satisfactory progress towards degree and performance of assigned duties.

Appointment of graduate research assistants may not exceed 20 hours per week during the first two long-session semesters of graduate study and 30 hours per week during subsequent long-session semesters. International students with J-1 and F-1 visas are limited to appointments of 20 hours per week during long session semesters.  International students may be appointed up to 40 hours a week during the summer commensurate with the level of assigned duties.

Whenever resources permit, hiring departments are encouraged to provide tuition assistance to a graduate research assistant as part of the total compensation of those appointed half-time or greater.  Tuition assistance is considered taxable income.

Appointment to research assistant positions designated security sensitive will be contingent on completion of a criminal background check (see Policy 7.E.2 “Criminal Background Checks” in the Revised Handbook of Operating Procedures.

Candidates for appointment as graduate research assistants should be notified in writing of their recommended appointment.
