The dean of the college/school shall establish salary policy for appointment/ reappointment of assistant instructors in the academic units under his/her jurisdiction. Appointment of assistant instructors is subject to approval by the dean of the college/school and the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. Once established for the year, the base annual rate for assistant instructors will remain the same for the term of the appointment; changes in rate of pay will be approved only for September 1 of the following academic year.
Appointments of assistant instructors are processed a semester at a time. Departments extending offers for periods exceeding one semester need to make clear that reappointment after the first semester is contingent on satisfactory progress towards degree and performance of assigned duties.
Assistant instructor appointments shall not exceed 20 hours per week during the first two long-session semesters of graduate study at the University and 30 hours per week during subsequent long-session semesters. Appointments for the summer term should be on a full-time basis when the appointment carries assignment of one lecture course for a six-week session (equivalent to criteria for faculty appointments), and the assistant instructor shall receive one-sixth of the long-session full-time rate. Individuals should be appointed for less than full time when service in lecture class, laboratory, discussion, or review sections, etc., is less than full time in the summer session.
International students with J-1 and F-1 visas are limited to appointments of 20 hours per week during long session semesters. International students may be appointed up to 40 hours a week during the summer commensurate with the level of assigned duties.
Appointment to assistant instructor positions designated security sensitive will be contingent on completion of a criminal background check (see Policy 7.E.2 “Criminal Background Checks” in the Revised Handbook of Operating Procedures.)
Candidates should be notified of their recommended appointment using the basic form illustrated in the attachment to this memorandum.
