James L. Hill, Senior Vice PresidentThe University of Texas at Austin
James L. Hill served as Vice President for Community and School Relations from 2000-07. He was responsible for the general management of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, the University Interscholastic League, Neighborhood Longhorns, Community and School Relations, University Outreach programs, and Pre-college Youth Development.
He facilitated UT's relationships with schools, school systems, and state agencies and oversaw community relations with various constituents and neighbors of the University. He also provided invaluable leadership in promoting a diverse student body and in strengthening the University's relationships with minorities and neighboring communities.
Dr. Hill joined the administration at The University of Texas at Austin in 1993 as the Associate Vice President for Administration and Public Affairs, after serving for five years as the Southwest Regional Director for the Educational Testing Services (ETS). While at ETS he supervised testing, measurement, evaluation, and research to public school and higher education personnel in a five state area: Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico.
He served as a top-level administrator with the Texas State Department of Education (Texas Education Agency) from 1974-1989. For eight years he was a Deputy Commissioner and was directly responsible for providing directions for the 1,100 local school districts in the state. He served in the commissioner's management council and provided assistance in the management of all state public school operations.
Since 1993, he has participated in numerous university activities as an advocate for the university administration. He served on the Task Force for Austin Major Employees (T-Fame), the Martin Luther King Statue committee, the Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition, Affirmative Action working committees, and the Austin Entrepreneurial Project.
Dr. Hill has received many awards, certificates, and special recognition throughout his career. These honors include the Austin Area Urban League/Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award, the Ex-Students' Association Legacy Award, and a Commendation for his long and dedicated service as a member of the State Agency Coordinating Committee. He was a founding member of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators.
Dr. James Hill received his bachelor's degree in education from Huston-Tillotson College and a master's degree in educational psychology and Ph.D. in educational administration from The University of Texas at Austin.
