Memorial Celebration for Dr. George Kozmetsky
The University of Texas at Austin
May 4, 2003
Good afternoon. I am Larry Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin. It is my honor to greet the friends and family of George Kozmetsky and to welcome you all to this tribute in his memory.
George Kozmetsky was an innovative pioneer with extraordinary vision and creativity. He was the father of Austin's entrepreneurial spirit and a prominent presence in the business community worldwide. His accomplishments reflected brightly on this city and helped to place Austin's name on the global register. Whenever I travel throughout the nation and overseas, I discover that business leaders are keenly aware of George Kozmetsky and what he has achieved here. In fact, many speak to me with reverence about what George had done for them personally.
His institutional legacy at The University of Texas at Austin is extraordinary, and his influence will be felt for generations. On a personal level, all who knew him will miss his kind and generous character and his remarkable imagination.
George had a gift for synthesizing his inspirations into highly successful partnerships between industry, business, government, and education. His ideas helped to build a stronger, more integrated society.
He was many things to many people over a lifetime of exceptional achievement. To his business colleagues, he was an entrepreneurial visionary and a savvy pragmatist who would eventually shape the development of Austin's new economy.
To his university colleagues, he was the dean who transformed the UT School of Business into a national leader.
To his students, he was an engaging mentor who would listen well and offer guidance in breakthrough technologies.
To those in need, he and his wife, Ronya, have been magnanimous supporters. They have given to children's advocacy programs, to innovative research and training, to hurricane relief, and to a variety of other worthy recipients.
To his friends, colleagues, and family, he was a gentle soul with a magic touch. And with his passing, a little of his magic will pass on to other hands that will carry forth his vision, enthusiasm, and admirable integrity.
I offer my condolences to Ronya Kozmetsky and their two children, Greg and Nadya. A great man has gone from us. Let us remember him with the respect and affection that he so genuinely earned.
