Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Remarks by Larry Faulkner
January 19, 1998
LBJ Auditorium
The University of Texas at Austin

Welcome to The University of Texas.

With a compelling dream, Martin Luther King, Jr., united our nation in the cause of equality and social justice. His legacy continues as he unites our community this evening in celebration of his life and achievements.

Today The University is at the center of our nation's great public debate over racial equality and how to achieve it. I speak for the entire University leadership when I say that we are committed to preserving and expanding diversity at this institution. We cannot change the past—but we can create the future—and our future must be one in which the door of opportunity is open to all. I believe that 1998 will see real progress in bringing together all of the people that live in this part of America called Texas.

We are pleased that the student body of The University has acted to build a monument to Dr. King on our campus. The artists have been selected by means of a nation-wide competition and they are now at work on the project. We look forward to dedicating a magnificent sculpture of Martin Luther King on the East Mall. It will serve as a permanent reminder of his courage, optimism, and love of humanity.

The message of Dr. King lives on. Thank you for joining us tonight for this celebration of his legacy.
