Recipient of the 2005 Roy Crane Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Performing Arts

Candida K. Nichols

Candida Nichols, a graduate student pursuing a Master's of Fine Arts degree in Costume Design, was awarded the 2005 Roy Crane Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Performing Arts.

The award was given for Ms. Nichols' costume designs for the musical adaptation of the children's play The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip by George Saunders. Her clever and imaginative conception created a world filled with inimitable and capricious “Fripian” characters. “Each of the costumes was woven, hand painted, trimmed, assembled and fit through an arduous progression,” writes one of her professors. The award committee was impressed with her bold original designs and believed her work enhanced the story with distinctiveness.
