The
University will be seeking reaffirmation of
accreditation from the Commission on Colleges
(COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools (SACS) during AY2007-08. Regional
accreditation is important to the maintenance
of our reputation and essential for access
to federal grants. Just as importantly, if
not more so, the accreditation process offers
us the opportunity to improve as an institution.
There will be a good deal of work required
in this endeavor. Indeed, it has already begun.
I ask for your participation and support.
The outcome of
our reaffirmation of accreditation will be
positive if we prepare appropriately. Of the
73 criteria, many are being responded to by
administrative staff. However, there are a
few areas that will involve input from essentially
the entire campus. It is important that each
academic program and administrative unit review
itself and its processes against the criteria.
Professor Neal Armstrong will be coordinating
this campus-wide effort. You may be hearing
from him. Along with Neal, many talented and
hardworking faculty and staff are helping us
understand the criteria, prepare the documents
we must submit, and arrange for the on-site
visit that will take place in spring 2008.
I know that sounds like a long way off, but
it is not.
You will find
helpful information about how to do the tasks
asked of you and various types of resources
in the Process and Resources sections above.
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs),
News about our accreditation activities, a
Glossary of terms used in the accreditation
process, and Upcoming Events are available.
Let me thank all
of those who have already worked so hard to
get us prepared and extend appreciation for
those who will engage the final stages as we
complete our preparations.
Sincerely,
William Powers, Jr.
President
