Wayne Patterson
Associate Vice President for Research
Director, Office of Research Support
Dr. Wayne Patterson is associate vice president for research and director of the Office of Research Support at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Patterson's initial work experience was as manager of several Air Force hospital clinical laboratories ranging in size from a small community hospital at Loring Air Force Base in Maine to a medical center laboratory at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.
After completing his doctoral program at Michigan State University, he was assigned as chief of a core research laboratory that supported clinical and basic research activities at the Air Force's largest medical and clinical research facility, Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to carrying out his own research in platelet function and coagulation disorders, the responsibilities of this position required frequent interaction with researchers at Wilford Hall and with other non-affiliated institutions, such as the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, SeaWorld of Texas, St. Mary's University and others. During his tenure at Wilford Hall, he also was a member of and administered the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and was chair of the IACUC for five years.
Upon leaving the Air Force, he accepted a position as manager of clinical affairs at an In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) device company, Sanofi Diagnostics Pasteur, in Chaska, Minn. In that position, his division planned and managed multi-site clinical trials of IVD products.
From that position, he was recruited to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) where he served initially as director of the Office for Research Subject Protections. He was promoted to executive director of research services and later to senior assistant vice president for research with oversight of three IRBs, the IACUC and the Institutional Good Laboratory Practices Program. For the 14 years at UTMB, he was a member of the Biological, Chemical, Radiation Safety and Radioactive Drug Research Committees and chaired the Chemical Safety Committee. He also had a faculty appointment in the Department of Pathology and the Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences and co-taught a graduate level course, "Research Ethics and Regulations," for several years.
Throughout his tenure at UTMB he was the institutional representative to the National Association for Biomedical Research and served on the Board of Directors for the Texas Society for Biomedical Research, organizations that work extensively on educational and legislative efforts to support increased activities in biomedical research at the state and national levels. Additionally, he is a site surveyor for the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) and a member of the Council for Accreditation of AAHRPP.
