Visiting Researcher/Scholar Program
The designation "Visiting Researcher/Scholar" is a privilege accorded to scholars or researchers temporarily in residence at The University of Texas at Austin.
Visiting Researchers/Scholars do not receive a stipend in their appointment, nor does their appointment imply tenure or continuation at the University. Please note that privileges, such as ID cards and keys, will not be provided until the Visiting Researcher/Scholar application is approved by the Vice President for Research Office.
Required Qualifications:
- The Visiting Researcher/Scholar must have a bachelors degree or higher
- The Visiting Researcher/Scholar must be in residence two or more weeks, up to one year
- The Visiting Researcher/Scholar designation may be extended with prior approval
The process originates in a department of the University with the nomination by a faculty member or researcher who will accept an active responsibility for helping the researchers/scholars while they are here. The nominating faculty member is responsible for obtaining the signature of the Visiting Researcher/Scholar on the appropriate Agreement and sending it to the Office of the Vice President for Research for approval. Once the nomination has been approved, a certificate of appointment is sent to the scholar via the sponsoring faculty member along with notice of appointment to the sponsoring department.
Required documents are:
- The 'Affiliated Worker: Visiting Researcher/Scholar' position creation on the Human Resource Management System (HRMS).
- A current CV
- Agreement (only one must be selected):
- Provide the Visiting Researcher/Scholar Agreement [PDF version, Word Version] for participants currently employed by a higher education institution or working independently
- Provide the Visiting Researcher/Scholar with Company Agreement [PDF version, Word version] if the participant is affiliated with a company
- Visiting Researcher/Scholar Addendum to HRMS document [PDF version, Word version]
Office space--if it is available--is provided to Visiting Researchers/Scholars by the departments with which they are associated.

Effective Nov. 2, 2009, the HRMS system will be used to process all visiting researcher/scholar nominations. Additional information and a video training segment can be found under “training” at the Human Resource Management System Web site.
