Visiting Scholar/Scientist Program
The designation "Visiting Scholar" is accorded to scholars temporarily in residence at The University of Texas at Austin. This notice provides information about Visiting Scholars and Scientists and the procedures for appointing them. Questions about the visiting scholar appointments may be directed to Liza Scarborough (512-471-2877 or liza@austin.utexas.edu).
The title of Visiting Scholar is reserved for established scholars of tenure rank in senior universities, or the equivalent, such as editors of distinguished journals or research scholars in recognized institutions of scholarship.
Visiting Scholars do not receive a stipend in their appointment, nor does their appointment imply tenure or continuation in the university. The appointment is ordinarily made for one year or less.
Office space--if it is available--is provided to Visiting Scholars by the departments with which they are associated.
A recommendation for the appointment of Visiting Scholar originates in a department of the university. A standard recommendation form (PDF version, Word version) should be used to nominate a scholar. The application should be accompanied by a vita, a brief note describing the circumstance of your guest's visit, and Intellectual Property Agreement form (PDF version, Word version). The nominating faculty member is responsible for obtaining the signature of the Visiting Scholar on the Intellectual Property Agreement and sending it to the Office of the Vice President for Research.
The request for appointment of Visiting Scholar is sent to and approved by the Vice President for Research; a certificate of appointment is sent to the scholar via the sponsoring faculty member along with notice of appointment to the sponsoring department.
