Visiting Scholar/Scientist Program
Benefits
While The University of Texas at Austin (UT) receives many international visitors, it is important to note that the Visiting Scholar designation is a non-compensatory appointment conferred by the Vice President for Research.
All visiting scholars are urged to attend one of the weekly orientation sessions held on Wednesday mornings from 9-10 a.m. in the International Office (471-1211).
Parking
If you are a visiting scholar and wish to park an automobile or motorcycle on the campus, you must obtain a parking permit. This can be arranged for you once you have obtained a letter from the department at UT with which you are affiliated or from the Vice President for Research. This letter will entitle you to an "A" parking permit.
Athletics
Visiting scholars are eligible to use the gym or any other recreation facilities. There is a charge for membership, which must be paid in advance.
Insurance
In the interest of protecting our international students and visiting faculty, the Board of Regents requires that all international students and J-1 visa-holders (as well as the accompanying spouse and dependents of J-1 visa-holders) be adequately covered by health insurance. Any visiting scholar, whether employed by the university or not, whose IAP-66 form for a J-1 visa has been processed by the International Office at UT is eligible for the same type of insurance as that which is available to students. The insurance program is one of the important matters covered in the orientation program for our international guests.
Discounts
As a visiting scholar you are entitled to the same discounts on campus events as every other member of the UT faculty.
Identification
An identification card (ID) will be provided to you after you obtain a letter of appointment from the Vice President for Research. The primary purpose of this ID is to enable you to use the library.
