Morbidity And Mortality Reports

All animals are to be checked daily for signs of disease or illness by the animal attendants. This policy is not limited to ARC animal staff. The following SOP is applicable to all researchers, PIs and other staff who work with research animals. When ill or injured animals are identified, the Compliance and Training manager should be notified ASAP. If the animal appears to be in immediate need of attention and the Compliance/Training manager is not available, the Facilities manager or a veterinarian must be notified.

In addition a morbidity and mortality card should be filled out and put in the cage cardholder of the animals cage. Bring the remaining 2 sheets to the Compliance and Training managers’ office and turn them in.

The Compliance and Training manager will immediately review the report depending on the nature of the illness the veterinarian; manager or a designated representative will examine the animal. The animal will be evaluated and PI will be contacted with recommendations of the manager in consultation with the ARC veterinarians. The prognosis will be recorded on the mortality and morbidity report. If further instructions are to be communicated with the animal technicians the manager will communicate those instructions directly to staff.

All morbidity and mortality reports are kept on file in the Compliance and Training manager’s office.

If sick animals are noted on weekends please call the on call manager.
