Jeffrey Siegel,
assistant professor of architectural engineering, comments on ozone
created by ionic air purifiers.
The California Air Resources Board recently banned all devices that
create an ozone concentration of more than 50 parts per billion,
starting in 2009. Siegel says that ionic air purifiers fall below
this threshold, but could easily reach such concentrations in small,
poorly ventilated spaces.

National Public Radio's Science Friday to host Dr. Richard Corsi
this week
Environmental Engineering Professor Richard Corsi will address
toxins in the home during a half-hour segment on National Public
Radio's (NPR) popular Science Friday program. The interview and
audience question-and-answer segment will air 2:30-3 p.m. Central
Standard Time.
Host Ira Flatow will discuss the topic with Corsi and Dr. Paul Blanc
from the University of California-San Francisco, a professor of
medicine and author of the book: "How Everyday Products Can Make
People Sick."
Although the local NPR affiliate KUT does not carry Science Friday,
local listeners may hear the program through websites listed at
http://www.sciencefriday.com/about/show/.

A modified plastic material greatly improves the ability to separate
global warming-linked carbon dioxide from natural gas as the gas is
prepared for use, according to chemical engineer Benny Freeman whose

Dr. David T. Allen, a chemical engineering professor, received the
2008 Joe J. King Professional Engineering Achievement Award for
making significant contributions to the engineering profession at
the Cockrell School of Engineering. Allen, the Gertz Regents
Professor of Chemical Engineering, has provided a scientific basis
for air quality management in Texas and has developed environmental
education materials for engineering curricula which are distributed
worldwide.
