Real World Welding Conditions

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

  • Determine sensitivity of HPW interface to real world welding conditions

  • Determine tolerances of joint preparation and other weld parameters in preparation for scaling process to larger pipes

Listing of Experiments

RESULTS
  • Impact toughness used as primary acceptance criteria
  • 21 welds included in study.
  • Welds failing average and individual criteria had low displacement or non-uniform joint cross-section exceeding worst possible conditions.
  • Overall results similar to "ideal" condition welds (see table).

Summary of CVN results

CONCLUSIONS
  • Modified parameters improve robustness of process by decreasing sensitivity to initial interface conditions.
  • Joint dimensions and other weld parameters have wide tolerance band.
  • Findings applicable to design of 12 inch fixture.
