The Center research is an interdisciplinary effort involving
investigators from several academic departments and research centers of The
University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). The Center for Electromagnetic
Materials and Devices conducts research that contributes to the
competitiveness of the electromagnetics-related businesses of its industrial
associates. The industrial community served by the Center for Electromagnetic
Materials and Devices derives sales from the application of electromagnetic
principles, materials, sensors, transducers, actuators, etc, in a wide variety
of fields, including power electronics, radar, telecommunications,
electro- mechanics, power conversion, security and anti-theft, electromagnetic
compatibility, and magnetic information storage.
The Center links UT-Austin researchers with companies and institutions
concerned with the development of new electromagnetics technology. With funds
partially provided by membership fees contributed by the industrial associates, the Center
supports the industrially relevant research conducted by UT-Austin
investigators. Member fees are augmented by contributions from UT-Austin, and
funding from state and federal government agencies. The contributions of an
individual industrial associate are leveraged at least 30-fold.
The Center industrial associates recommend, help to define, and monitor the progress of
the research projects. They have reasonable access to teams of UT-Austin
researchers for discussions of their research. In addition, the Center invites
the industrial associates to attend its annual research presentation.
In summary, the Center for Electromagnetic Materials and Devices is an
effective two way channel between industry and UT-Austin. Through this channel,
a strong group of UT-Austin researchers, and the substantial physical resources
of UT-Austin, remains focused on engineering solutions to problems of interest
to its industrial associates.
