THE 1ST REUNION
of the Alumni of the
WELCH SUMMER SCHOLAR PROGRAM (WSSP)

was held 21 October 2006, at the American Chemical Society's 62nd Southwest Regional Meeting in Houston, Texas. Approximately 15 alumni and their parents arrived to celebrate the WSSP and it's history, and to renew old friendships.

Dr. Paul Pantano, Site Director at the University of Texas at Dallas, offered a presentation on the WSSP at UT/Dallas; Professor Mamie Moy, Site Director at the University of Houston told of her involvement with the program over the past 20 years; and Assistant Professor Anna Bergstrom of Texas Lutheran University offered her insight into the program. Professor Bergstrom was a member of the 1st class of Welch Summer Scholars and has worked with the program every year in one role or another from Resident Assistant to Program Coordinator at The University of Texas at Austin.

We were honored with a surprise visit from Dr. Catherine T. Hunt, President-elect of the American Chemical Society. The alumni had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hunt and visiting with her about their experiences in the program.

At 6:00pm, we once again met for a hearty dinner of fresh gulf snapper and shrimp with plenty of time to catch up on the events of the years since WSSP participation and plans for the future. Click here to see some photos of our gathering.
