Project Duration:

July 2008 - June 2009

Description:

The George Kaiser Family Foundation wants to increase the economic stability of Tulsa, OK 's low-income parents as an important pathway to preventing the inter-generational transmission of poverty. One element of this pathway -- building on efforts that have emerged in a number of regions (e.g., Austin, TX; Milwaukee, WI; and Seattle, WA) in recent years -- involves the design and implementation of a sectoral jobs strategy that includes identifying several sectors that will provide stable jobs with benefits and opportunities for advancement, integrating wage supplements, and establishing job training partnerships with employers and training providers to facilitate the matching of low-income working parents with jobs in these sectors.

This project is the initial phase of a three-year proposal to design and implement a sectoral jobs strategy for Tulsa. It begins with a 12-month planning process to design a sectoral strategy that is being led by the Ray Marshall Center, in partnership with Harvard University 's Center on the Developing Child, the overall lead for the Tulsa Initiative, and the Community Action Program (CAP) of Tulsa County
