The University of Texas at Pan American (UTPA) is located on the Border, in Edinburg, Texas. Under contract with GCATTC, Pan Am has developed and offered six courses to prepare students to become Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDCs). The curriculum makes extensive use of the CSAT TIPS and TAPS. The Rehabilitative Services Program of Pan Am now offers a specialty track for Addictions Studies and a Minor in Addiction Studies. Beginning in 2000, UTPA-GCATTC began hosting videoconferences, in collaboration with various community agencies, on addictions related topics. These conferences are linked to interactive sites in other predominantly Hispanic border locations such as Laredo, Brownsville, El Paso, Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Del Rio, and San Antonio. Collaborative efforts are underway to include Zapata, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico in the border videoconferences. Since October 1, 2000, the UTPA-GCATTC coordinator, Judith Guetzow and staff have co-hosted over 80 area professional conferences/workshops, many which have been in videoconferencing format. In April, 2006, the “6th Annual Sexual Assault Awareness” training, and the “8th Annual Rehabilitation and Addictions: Contemporary Issues” conference were held. Two additional conferences, trainings and videoconferences are planned for summer 2008 and fall 2008, respectively. Link for details
