The University of Texas at Austin, School of Social Work (UTSW) component of the GCATTC has provided training to over 2000 students in chemical dependence courses during the last four years. An important accomplishment has been the development of a broad range of courses in the CD area in conjunction with new faculty recruited for teaching and research in this area. The newest course "Relapse and Recovery" is a part of the new Center for Students in Recovery. In addition, the Center has counselors available for students, provides weekly support groups, a 12-Step group, and student scholarship money. A major ongoing project of the UT component is an extensive web site of alcohol and drug abuse treatment resources that is updated annually. The site includes an interactive alcohol assessment section, a comprehensive bibliography of journal articles, and a TIP 21 resource for instructors. This resource includes teaching points and summaries of the protocol.

The 2006 regional social work workshop focused on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy related to anxiety, anger, and depression in chemical dependence treatment. The 2003 workshop focused on substance abuse treatment interventions, the 2004 workshop focused on movement from effectiveness studies to process-oriented studies in chemical dependence treatment, and the 2005 workshop focused on Mindful Meditation, Spirituality and Substance Abuse Treatment. A recent project has involved development of two independent evaluation/planning instruments for culturally competent services for African American and Hispanic clients and their families. Other projects include a self-paced course on clinical supervision for professionals working in the field; this course is available on a CD. Link for details
