September 2007: A History of Transportation Research with Dr. Clyde Lee
The lecture was given on Friday, September 14, 2007, at the Cockrell School of Engineering as part of the “Expert Perspectives in Transportation” series sponsored by the Transportation Engineering Group in the Department of Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering. August 2007: Forum on E85 Ethanol Held at CTR
CTR hosted an E85 Ethanol Forum in August, where representatives of E85 initiatives presented information on the use of biofuel for use in consumer vehicles. The forums, which are sponsored by General Motors Corporation, are being presented in conjunction with discounted E85 fuel sales in selected locations. Read full article about E85 Ethanol Forum.
April 2007: CTR Researcher Chosen for Technical Editorial Board
CTR Researcher Dr. Yetkin Yildirim has been selected to serve as the editor-in-chief of the Technical Editorial Board for the Pavement Preservation Journal. The journal, produced by the Foundation for Pavement Preservation, is aimed at all professionals in the pavement preservation industry, as well as state DOTs, federal agencies, academia and researchers. January 2007: Innovative Transportation Solution Arrives in Austin
Austin recently became part of a growing international movement to ease traffic and improve air quality: car sharing. Car sharing provides flexible access to a car for urban dwellers who don’t want the cost and commitment of car ownership. Read full article about Austin CarShare.
November 8, 2006: Professor C. Michael Walton Elected ARTBA Chairman
UT's Professor C. Michael Walton was elected chairman of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) at the organization's October 1 annual meeting. Walton has held a variety of ARTBA leadership positions and helped develop the association's policy positions on federal transportation development issues. Walton, who holds the E.H. Cockrell Centennial Chair in Engineering, is an international leader in transportation policy and engineering analysis.
September 19, 2006: CTR Field Research: Bike Lanes Reduce Danger for Bicyclists and Drivers
Winner of a 2005 TxDOT Top Research Innovations and Findings Award! (PDF, 605 KB) By studying the interactions of drivers and bicyclists on Texas roads, graduate research assistant Ian Hallett, CTR Director Randy Machemehl, and other engineers at the university's Center for Transportation Research have discovered that having painted bike lanes on streets and roads helps both commuters stay in safer, more central positions in their respective lanes. June 14, 2006: Showcase of New Fuel-Saving Vehicles by GM
CTR played host to General Motors on the Austin stop of their national tour showcasing the industry's newest solution to rising fuel prices. A group representing local media and researchers was given a presentation showcasing the technological advancements GM has made to increase fuel efficiency. They were also given an introduction to a few of the new vehicles, as well as a test drive.
