Advanced Institute for Transportation Infrastructure Engineering and Management

The Advanced Institute for Transportation Infrastructure Engineering and Management continues its mission to increase the number, quality, and diversity of professionals entering the transportation sector with its annual "Undergraduate Summer Internship in Transportation." A high percentage of the Institute's undergraduate fellows continue their studies in transportation research.

The Advanced Institute is part of a national program that recruits, teaches, and mentors students entering the transportation field, with special emphasis placed on the quality and diversity of that professional pool. Established in 1990 in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), the Institute is part of the Southwest Region University Transportation Center (SWUTC) established by USDOT.

The Advanced Institute recognizes that the planning, design, and management of the transportation infrastructure represents considerable challenges that cut across traditional civil engineering disciplines. Moreover, professionals involved in the engineering and management of infrastructure systems must take into account the complex interactions among the engineering, financial, economic, environment, and social aspects of a given problem. Accordingly, the Institute is multimodal in scope and cross-disciplinary in perspective, addressing not only the broader aspects of infrastructure planning and management, but also its technical engineering requirements.

The academic program in the Advanced Institute seeks to build on established strengths in Civil Engineering and in other University disciplines, including operations research, community and regional planning, computer science, and public affairs. The Institute graduates are all contributing to the transportation sector through employment in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and/or firms engaged in providing services to transportation agencies, as well as through further advanced study in transportation. The Institute provides support to its Fellows - a substantial percentage of which are minorities and women - and assists them in attending transportation conferences. Moreover, the Institute organizes and hosts a number of workshops, tutorials, and distinguished speakers throughout the year.
